History Of The Flinders Medical Group

Cloncurry has been the subject of several studies both by James Cook University and Health Workforce Qld. Cloncurry experienced many years of poor medical services, both organisations have previously put forward potential models of medical services.

In early 2004, Dr Cronin started doing locum relief work in Cloncurry, as her husband, Peter O’Regan, a chartered accountant had started a branch of his practice in Cloncurry.

After experiencing and reviewing the state of the medical services, Dr Cronin with Drs Bryan Connor and Chris Appleby, decided to build a medical practice based on the findings of previously conducted research studies based on Cloncurry. The aim was to establish an academic practice, providing a teaching environment for young doctors as a long term strategy to recruit doctors to work in Cloncurry primarily and rural Australia in general.

To further this aim, Dr Cronin and her husband purchased a commercial property in Cloncurry which was modified to incorporate a modern, purpose built six consulting room practice with facilities to deal with minor trauma, skin surgery and occupational medicine.

The Flinders Medical Centre – Montville, located in the Sunshine Coast Hinterland, was acquired in 2006 with a view to provide a practice from which suitably qualified senior Doctors could be sourced to provide relief to the doctors working in the Cloncurry practice. Montville also a practice location senior Cloncurry Doctors could work as a respite from the intensive nature of rural General Practice in Cloncurry.

The Flinders Medical Centre – Maleny was designed and constructed in 2011 as a sister practice to the Flinders Medical Centre – Montville with a view to increase the sustainability of the Montville practice and to provide a larger facility to expand services to the Sunshine Coast Hinterland.

In 2012 Ochre Health acquired the Flinders Medical Centre – Montville and the Flinders Medical Centre – Maleny which will operate as outreach sites for the GP SuperClinic which will be constructed at Sippy Downs and will be located within the Sunshine Coast University Campus.
